From 11 February to 23 April 2023, the solo exhibition "Sun with Teeth" by AMANDA ZIEMELE, winner of the Purvītis Prize 2021, will take place in the Cupola Hall of the main building of the LNMA (Jaņa Rozentāla laukums 1, Riga). The project focuses on the diverse possibilities and manifestations of the medium of painting, which in its relationship with space becomes an installation inviting the visitor's gaze.
Amanda Ziemele is one of the most striking and unconventional artists in the Latvian current art scene. The jury at the time highlighted the artist's ability to create an open space where "nothing is too much or missing; it gives a certain sense of freedom to everyone and everything". Space is still a significant part of her work today.
Amanda Ziemele does not limit herself to the usual two-dimensional rectangular/square plane, but seeks to expand the space of expression beyond the conventional frame of painting. She arranges her works in a kind of puzzle, in which each piece of colour, their rhythm and distance from each other are essential. The artist emphasises that art is not detached from life and is her commentary on events and the world.
