Paris. Music. Passion. Bohemia.

What do you do when you are young, in love, and convinced that one day all of Paris will be at your feet? Love, create, dream, make mistakes — and begin again. Operetta Theatre’s new production “Paris Bohemia” takes us to Montmartre — a world of artists, dreamers and lovers, where passion, seduction, jealousy and ambition flourish amid the freedom of bohemian life. Here, love never goes according to plan. But this is not the Paris you expect.

In director Sonora Vaice’s interpretation, the story inspired by Imre Kálmán’s operetta “The Violet of Montmartre” is reimagined in a contemporary theatrical language, where Parisian bohemia meets the aesthetics of haute couture and human character and instinct are reflected in forms inspired by nature and the world of insects. In the creations of costume designer Elīna Milta-Niedrāja, natural structures, textures and colours are transformed into a sophisticated language of stage fashion. Meanwhile, Imre Kálmán’s captivating melodies take on a new life through jazz interpretations, bringing a fresh sense of freedom and energy to the romance and temperament of operetta. Love and jealousy. Ambition and seduction. Parisian bohemia, Kálmán’s music and haute couture — brought together on stage.
Paris never sleeps. Bohemia never dies. And sometimes beauty grows wings.
