Debussy. Must be experienced

December 20, Saturday 2025 19.00
The musical story “Debussy. Must be experienced…” was created by three bright young talents. The wider audience became acquainted with soprano Etīna Emīlija Saulīte last year when she reached the finals of the prestigious Belvedere Young Opera Singers Competition, while pianist Daniils Mickevičs came into the spotlight when he won the Jāzeps Vītols International Piano Competition in the autumn of 2023. Artis Jančevskis, a young actor from the Valmiera Theatre, is also increasingly capturing attention, and a couple of seasons ago, he was nominated for the Spēlmaņu nakts (Performers’ Night) award in the category “Young Actor of the Year.” Written by Madara Rutkēviča, the story portrays Claude Debussy’s personality through his own compositions and letters, which he sent to close friends and notable figures from various artistic fields, revealing his emotions and thoughts on a wide variety of topics. The programme will feature Debussy’s piano miniatures and songs for voice and piano, with a large part of the programme consisting of lesser-known French compositions. The trio adds: “We will create a dreamy, serene, impressionistic mood that will allow the audience to reflect on spiritual values and forget the hectic rush and routine of daily life.”

Programme
Claude Debussy’s compositions: prelude “The Girl with the Flaxen Hair” (La fille aux cheveux de lin), “Bohemian dance” (Danse bohémienne), Apparition, “Sentimental Dialogue” (Colloque sentimental), “Moonlight” (Clair de lune) from Suite Bergamasque, prelude Minstrels, “Wooden Horses” (Chevaux de bois) from the song cycle Ariettes oubliées, Ballades de François Villon, “Christmas for Children Who No Longer Have a Home” (Noël des enfants qui n'ont plus de maison), prelude Général Lavine – eccentric, De soir from the cycle Proses lyriques, “Evenings Lighted by the Glow of Coals” (Les Soirs illuminés par l'ardeur du charbon).
