A noble and friendly gesture during Latvia’s half-year presidency of the Council of the European Union has been the establishment of the Rīga Cathedral International Organ Music Festival. This will be a truly unique event in that the programme will include music composed or arranged for the organ from all 28 member states in the European Union. During 14 concerts in July, Latvian organists will be joined by performers from Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and Austria at the Rīga Cathedral. Each concert will feature music from two countries, as performed by different organists, and there will also be evenings for soloists who are foreign guests at the festival. Tālivaldis Deksnis will open the colourful parade on July 1 with Latvian music, and Ilze Reine and Jānis Pelše will perform music from Poland and Luxembourg on July 31 to conclude the festival. Between those two dates audiences will have a chance to hear surprising organ music that, in many cases, has not been heard in Latvia before.
