On the evening of 11 May, the Latvian Radio Big Band will introduce visitors to the Spīķeri Concert Hall to composer, trumpeter and big band leader Thad Jones, who is deservedly called not only one of the greatest jazz trumpet soloists of all time, but also an extremely important figure in big band music. Thad Jones began his career in the big band genre with the legendary Cound Basie Orchestra (and later became its leader), but his signature as an arranger has always been something unique and unprecedented - he has always been able to combine the styles of the 60s, 60s, 60s, 60s and 60s. He has always been able to combine the rhythms of the popular music of the 1960s - rock'n'roll, rhythm'n'blues - with the harmonies of jazz and swing, thus creating a completely new sound for those times, which in the 1960s, when the era of big band and swing was in its decline, allowed the big band to remain relevant as a formation.
The programme "An Evening of American Jazz" includes pieces from several Thad Jones/Mel Lewis big band recordings, including "Greetings and Salutations", "Little Rascal On A Rock", as well as the iconic arrangement of "Groove Merchant", "A Child Is Born", "Jive Samba" and other seminal pieces in jazz history, which will give listeners, both seasoned jazz connoisseurs and those just beginning to explore the big band genre, a comprehensive insight into the work of Thad Jones - one of the cornerstones of the big band genre.
With the concert "American Jazz Evening", the Latvian Radio Big Band is launching a new concert series, in which the audience will be invited to look back with the Big Band at the "golden heritage" of the big band genre and the most important jazz icons both in Latvia and worldwide!
