Witches by Arvils Linde

August 07, Friday - August 31, Monday
From August 7 to August 31, 2020 Art gallery in PUTTI premises, Peitavas street 5, Old Riga.
Black night, not at all.
A desert place that is not a place at all.
In a charcoal silence, the darkness that breathes.
Invisible snow swirls past you, you can hear barely felt steps.
An oily, vibrating moon, and a creature radiating in the black wind approaching…

A series of large-format paintings about strong personalities - witches of Riga, created inspired by Rainis' "Fire and Night" image of Spidola. A mystical, witchy creature that combines dazzling beauty and elusive abyss. Despite its cooperation with the forces of darkness, it is always able to reject the call of the Black Knight, to fulfill the destiny. Instead, she chooses to create her own! A being who draws strength and wisdom from elusive spheres and forces that others do not understand or are afraid of. She is aware that without darkness, there can be no light. In the words of Rainis ’Fire and Night, it says its mantra
I am I, I come myself,
I'm leaving myself, I don't know where -
where do you like -
I shine by my own light,
I Spidola, Fire my father.

The artist will take the viewer along the path of mysticism, folklore and forgotten forces, bringing it into unaccustomed darkness, where the current processes in the world are ironically leading. In the dark, where a variety of wild beasts and other known and unknown beings live, to capture the spirit of time and space through the metaphor of a fairy tale.

A story about darkness, night creatures, a little paganism, a little folklore, but mostly about strong personalities, about women. The artist Arvils Linde is well known in the world of Latvian fashion and art. He holds bachelor's and master's degrees in Fashion Design (Latvian Academy of Arts) and a master's degree in painting (Latvian Academy of Arts). After the creation of several fashion collections, he has been active for the last 5 years and has gained rapid recognition in the field of visual art, focusing on illustration and painting. Solo exhibitions of his drawings and paintings have been exhibited not only in various places in Riga, such as the VIP lounge of Riga Airport, but also in various public places in Latvia, including the Ogre Museum of Art and History and elsewhere.
