Western Fashion and China

The exhibition features several dozen items of clothing, as well as exotic accessories and small interior items from the unique Alexandre Vassiliev collection from the 18th to 21st centuries. The exhibition focuses on how Chinese culture has influenced Western fashion over the years.

With the help of clothing and accessories, this exhibition will allow the visitor to follow along the Western interest in China, highlighting various periods of history when China's culture had the most impact on European style: from rococo era "chinoiserie" to the Victorian era, from Shanghai, which in the 1920s was the world's ''sin city'' and capital of entertainment , to the styles worn during the days of Mao Zedong in the 1950s and 60s and the uniform-style.

The Fashion Museum of Riga is a collaboration with the Alexandre Vassiliev Foundation; its namesake, the famous fashion historian and collector Alexandre Vassiliev owns more than 55,000 items which form the third largest private collection of couture in the world.
