The seemingly nondescript young man with ascetic features and a pair of spectacles has something Schubert-like about him, concealing volcanic sonar energy and a piercing outlook. At the age of 27, Shostakovich did not pass away like Joplin, Hendrix or Winehouse, but had jolly good fun writing a concerto which entrusts the pianist with dizzying tasks. The score is saturated with references to masterworks of various centuries. What an exciting music!
