Season Opening Concert of the Dzintari Concert Hall
Performers: Raimonds Pauls, Vestards Šimkus, Harijs Bašs, Andrejs Feldmanis, Dināra Rudāne, Latvian Radio Big Band, Jurmala Festival Orchestra. Conductor – Mārtiņš Ozoliņš.
Programme: George Gershwin, Second Rhapsody, and others. The impressive Dzintari Concert Hall summer season opening offers the best of our pianists! Vestards Šimkus has been the audience’s favourite for many years, a skilful master of both classics and Gershwin. George Gershwin craftily combines European academic music traditions with jazz, American lightness and culture. The Second Rhapsody for piano and orchestra is a rarely performed masterpiece, however close to Gershwin’s heart, “It is the best thing I have ever written”. The programme also includes an entirely new star in the piano sky – Andrejs Feldmanis, winner of the Inese Galante talent competition. The audience will have the opportunity to enjoy a suite from the ballet Dangerous Liaisons by Arturs Maskats, who is turning a significant age this year. The ballet, a story of passions and intrigues overcome by romantic love and tender dance, has conquered many hearts.
The second half will feature Harijs Bašs, the fierce grandmaster of jazz, and Raimonds Pauls, whose individual touch needs no comment. Both gentlemen become absorbed by the whirling, energetic rhythm of ragtime – the predecessor of jazz.
